I almost cried.

I just went to the “new products” on the Trades of Hope website, and there’s a brand-new item called “Pink Awareness Earrings,” made by survivors of sex trafficking in Asia to raise awareness for breast cancer.

I didn’t know. I didn’t know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you?

I Should Have Known

I have been getting to know this familiar foe for awhile now. I have been staring at mean and ugly breast cancer in the face for the past nine months. Maybe you have been staring at it too—in yourself, in your friend, in your loved one.

Breast cancer is mean, ugly, vicious, and horrific! It’s deadly! I hate it!

I almost cried when I saw these earrings, because most of my time in the safehouses in Spain is spent walking alongside rescued immigrant women from North Africa. One of them is currently fighting metastasized cancer (breast, lung, bone, etc.)

It’s a long, hard, exhausting battle that she is fighting . . . daily. However, she doesn’t fight alone. I fight alongside her, and so do others around the world.

That’s what Trades of Hope is doing. They are fighting.

In addition to helping provide work for survivors of human trafficking in Asia, two dollars from each purchase of these beautiful breast cancer awareness items will also be donated to wellness programs for artisans in Haiti.

Why?

“We have seen lives taken too soon from the volatile conditions that an environment of poverty creates. When families are just trying to get by day to day it can feel beyond impossible to plan any further than that. Because of this, so many families end up using the few resources they have for the greatest need at the time – being food, school, or rent. Medical care is put on the back burner until it reaches a state of emergency and then all resources are depleted. To change this pattern we see it as vital to not only provide educational support in preventive health measures, but access to quality monthly health care & screenings needed to protect the lives in this community that we love so much.”

– Chandler, Artisan Community Founder in Haiti

Trades of Hope also has this “Mighty Warrior Bracelet” for those fighting breast cancer.

I just bought one of these “Mighty Warrior” bracelets for my North African friend at the safe house. She is a “Mighty Warrior”! This bracelet will be especially meaningful to her since it is made by the hands of survivors of sex trafficking—just like her!

I also got myself a pair of those “Pink Awareness” earrings—a symbol and a prayer reminder for my dear friend.

What about you? Do you know anyone fighting breast cancer?
