Today, April 18, 2020, I opened my agenda to read, “Día International de los Monumentos y Sitios” (International Day for Monuments and Sites).

I can remember writing these words in my agenda a few months ago. Yes, I still prefer written agendas. 🙂

It was a day when I was online, exploring all the amazing art museums to visit in Spain—Barcelona, Madrid, etc.

I was wearing my cultural awareness glasses and dreaming—dreaming of the Prado Museum in Madrid.

During my research, I discovered that Spain regularly offers free museum days. I was so excited and marked them all down on my calendar—April 18, May 18, October 12, and December 6.

“Generally speaking, museums have free access on April 18, International Day for Monuments and Sites; the International Museum Day around May 18; the 12th October, Spanish National Holiday and Hispanic Day; and the 6th December, Spanish Constitution Day.”

My plan was to visit a different museum on each of these days. I love art, museums, and free things. Perfect!

Not Today!

Unfortunately, today, it’s not possible to visit the Picasso Museum in Barcelona—or any other museum for that matter.

Everything is closed in Spain, and we are still in total lockdown.

But, I will not despair!

I did some more digging online and came across this fun article by See Beyond, “60 Things to Do When You are Stuck at Home.” Yes, can you tell I’m still desperate to find a way to entertain myself and my four kids?

The thrill of our family’s virtual Disney trip has already worn off!

In this See Beyond’s article, under the category, “Learning/Mental Stimulation,” some words jumped off the page at me.

“Take a virtual tour of a museum.”

Yes! That’s it! Even stuck at home, I can visit a museum today . . . and it’s FREE—just like my planned museum visit in Spain today.

There are 12 museums around the world to choose from —The Musée d’Orsay in Paris , The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam—to name a few.

So, it may not be the Prado in Madrid or the Picasso in Barcelona, but I’m going on a free museum visit today! Wanna come with me?

I’m starting with a trip to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam!
