“Do they use the same ‘George Washington money’ in Florida as they do in Pennsylvania?”

I was cooking dinner, while my 8-year-old son, Pierre, scrambled through his long-lost billfold found in the drawer of his bedroom dresser. The faded Barcelona emblem and the broken zipper showed its love and long use. It was actually a hand-me-down from one of his three older brothers.

He counted the six wrinkled, faded bills joyfully, already dreaming of his next purchases.

Pierre’s life has been “across borders, across cultures, and across languages.”

Since birth . . . across borders.

Born in France, lived in the United States, Pierre now lives in Spain. In his short little life, he has traveled to more countries than he can count on his two little hands.

Across borders . . . and often, across currencies.

Pierre knows all about money conversion—exchanging money. He knows about dollars, euros, dirhams, CFA francs, pesos . . .

Did you know that there are 180 different currencies in the world?

Money Exchange

Living in Spain, Pierre often hears us talking about the exchange rate between euros and dollars.

Money conversion is a part of our world, a part of our life.

When you cross borders, you exchange money. No two lands on different sides of a border could possibly use the same money, the same currency, the same “George Washington bills”.

At least, that’s what Pierre thought.

Pierre lived in Pennsylvania for 1 1/2 years, between the ages of 4-6. He is excited to return there to visit his friends this summer. He also knows that we are going to cross state borders. Nana lives in Missouri, but Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Kimi, Uncle Parker, and his cousins live in Florida.

He knows that he is going to be crossing borders, and he assumes that also means crossing currencies.

“Do they use the same ‘George Washington money’ in Florida as they do in Pennsylvania?” Pierre asked.

“They sure do!” I replied. “Makes for easy travel and no loss on the foreign exchange!”

U.S.A . . . here we come . . . carrying our “George Washington money”!
