“May 5,” I wrote in my journal.

My 9-year-old son, Pierre, was sitting next to me at the dining room table working on his homework.

“Today is Cinco de Mayo!” I said with enthusiasm.

“What’s Cinco de Mayo?” Pierre asked me.

“It’s a big celebration in Mexico,” I explained.

“What’s it for?” he asked me curiously.

“I honestly don’t know the story,” I answered. “Let’s find out!”

Cultural Awareness Glasses

It had been awhile since Pierre had put on his cultural awareness glasses, so we had to hunt for them in the house.

His question about this Mexican holiday was the perfect opportunity to open my child to the world.

We put on our cultural awareness glasses and found this fun video . . .

Take a look!

French roots? Cinco de Mayo has French roots! I had no idea.

My French husband was sitting in the living room with us.

“Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over the French invasion?” I asked him.

“No, I had no idea,” he replied.

Wow! It’s amazing how culturally ignorant we are. We need to be wearing our cultural awareness glasses all the time.

Now, this French family knows that Cinco de Mayo has French origins.

Other International Roots

Right after watching the video, Pierre and I took our dog, Samy, on a short walk around the neighborhood.

Cinco de Mayo is about four countries,” Pierre said.

He had been carefully listening to that video.

“Which countries were a part of Cinco de Mayo?” I asked him.

“Mexico, France, Spain and . . . ” he answered. “I can’t remember the last one.”

“England,” I said. “Isn’t that interesting? Cinco de Mayo is about Mexico, France, Spain, and England. It’s an international holiday!”

So, in honor of Mexico and their victory over the French invaders . . . tonight, our French family in Spain will enjoy eating tacos and fajitas!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
