“Happy Father’s Day!” my 15-year-old said joyfully as he walked in the door last Friday afternoon from school. He was talking to his dad.

“What?” I thought to myself. “It’s Friday. It can’t be Father’s Day. Father’s Day is always on a Sunday.”

Well, it may always be on a Sunday in the United States, but here in Spain, it is on March 19. It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is. This year, that date just happened to fall on a Friday.

It also seems like it should be in June. Isn’t Father’s Day’s always in June? Not here in Spain.

That’s why I missed it again. I wasn’t ready! March was too early.

Strange? Abnormal?

Why does this seem strange to me? It doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel normal.

Why is that? Who says that having “Father’s Day” on a Sunday is the best option, the only option? Who says that having “Father’s Day” in June is the best option, the only option? Maybe it seems that we would have a better chance of being able to spend time with our fathers if it fell on the weekend, rather than on a workday—like Friday! Maybe it seems like June would bring nicer weather, warmer days for celebrating.

I just have to remember . . . it’s not good or bad, better or worse, right or wrong . . . it’s just different!

I live in Spain, so I must do as the Spaniards do! That means celebrating “Father’s Day” on a Friday . . . in March!

Not the First Time!

This isn’t the first year I’ve missed Father’s Day in Spain. Here’s my story from last year, “Was it ‘Father’s Day Everywhere in the World?”. You would think I would have remembered.

And, it’s not just Father’s Day. Mother’s Day also changes around the world. Mother’s Day—Different Countries, Different Dates

Wherever you are in the world . . . Happy Father’s Day . . . Happy Mother’s Day . . . not just today . . . everyday.

Next year, on March 19, hopefully I’ll be ready to celebrate Father’s Day here in Spain!
