When I started my cultural story blog one year ago, I hoped that my stories would allow people to travel the world. In my About page, I invited readers to pour a cup of coffee or tea (or their favorite drink), sit down, and travel the world with me.
I desired that readers would sit in their living room and experience foreign lands, peoples, cultures, and languages through my stories. As I relayed my own experiences, I hoped that people could somehow experience them too.
There are many obvious reasons why some might never board an airplane to cross the globe. Some might be afraid to travel, or some might not have the financial means. Some might not be able to get away from work and family responsibilities to wander the globe.
There are a lot of reasons.
I Didn’t Expect This!
However, when I started my blog, I certainly wasn’t anticipating that one day we would all be stuck at home around the world—simply unable to travel. I never dreamed—in my wildest nightmares—that one day we would be unable to travel because a virus is wrecking havoc around the globe.
I didn’t expect this. You probably didn’t either.
I’ve been thinking recently about the original reason I started my blog. I wanted to share my cultural stories and experiences with the world out there—whoever cares to listen. But, more importantly, I wanted to help people become more aware of the world out there, grow in their understanding of it, and learn to love and appreciate it as much as I do.
I invited people to jump on a plane and come hang out with me, and I invited people to sit back on their comfortable living room couch and journey with me.
No Excuses!
Yes, it’s true that most of us can’t board a plane right now to go trekking around the world, but we can still put on our cultural awareness glasses—right in our homes.
In my free ebook, “The 5-Day Journey to Cultural Awareness,” every day’s activity can be done virtually—right in your home.
Even if you can’t find a local, ethnic restaurant to try in your home town, you can still find an ethnic recipe online and experiment in the kitchen. You can still explore the world on your plate.
Even if you can’t physically meet up face-to-face with people around the world, you can still find virtual pen pals (epals) to connect with and learn from. I’m even considering asking our “Oasis of Cultures” in Pennsylvania if they would like to do a zoom connect—hopefully adding new people from other countries and cultures from around world.

Get Out Your Glasses!
It’s not because we have been stuck inside our houses that we can’t put on our cultural awareness glasses and continue to cultivate our cultural learning.
We can use the global pandemic as an excuse, but it’s a lame one.
Let’s do this! I’m going to dig out my dusty eyeglass case and put on my cultural awareness glasses too. It’s time to be culturally curious and explore the world.
Are you ready to join me?! I’m bringing my kids along on the journey. If you have children, why don’t you do the same?
None of us will ever be the same again!
