It’s that festive time of year again.
I eagerly get out the treasured boxes and trunks from the garage.
The Christmas tree, decorations, nativity sets,
I open the trunk, and there is it.
Those little red and green reindeer antlers,
The ones you hated wearing on your head.
Even though you looked so cute,
Along with your navy-blue Santa sweater.
This year, those little felt antlers,
Make me cry, not smile.
I take out our family’s stockings,
One by one, I pull them out of the plastic bag.
There it is, your light green moose sock,
The one we always stuffed with special treats and toys.
I open it, peek inside,
I hold it to my face, smell it deeply.
There are probably crumbs still inside,
From last year’s Christmas morning delights.
This year, that little felt stocking,
Makes me cry, not smile.
I sit out your reindeer antlers,
I hang up your moose stocking.
Trying to hold on to you,
Through my heart’s Christmas memories.
In memory of Samy, our 16-year-old world-traveling dog, who left us on August 22, 2022.
